dc.description.abstract There is a current misconception over building on sensitive landscape. Our generation views architecture as an entity separate from the 'natural' environment. In contrast to examples from our past it is apparent that the current mind set is mainly of preservation in the face of consumerism. This defensive position is justifiable as many valued landscapes have been either lost or irrevocably damaged as a result of industrialisation and intensive urbanisation. However it is essential for us to accept that successful architecture can not only preserve the respected landscape, it can also enhance it. Building in sensitive landscape must be an exercise in subtle and unimposing architecture, where the nobility of the building is apparent as well as the magnificence of the surrounding environment. This thesis analyses two of New Zealand's unique resources: the coastal landscape and the art. By bringing these two themes together in a culturally sensitive manner this architectural approach successfully resolves the argument between the preservation of landscape and the urbanisation of remote areas. en
