Abstract:
There is a push in many Western countries to incorporate consumer and community input more widely in the health sector. Participation by non-professionals in the planning and development of primary care services is recognised to improve access to, and the appropriateness of, services. However, as there is only limited research evidence that participation improves patient outcomes, attitudes about the relative importance of community participation tend to be polarised along ideological lines.
