Abstract:
Have you observed toddlers locating objects? Moving objects? Tipping or pouring sand and water? Counting? Reading numerals? Or recognising shapes? My recent research provides examples of children as young as 12 months of age engaging in these types of experiences naturally, clearly indicating mathematical thinking. In fact, the toddlers in the study explored their outdoor environment every day in mathematical ways.
