Road improvement in Cambodia: Livelihood, education, health, and empowerment

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the changes in the socio-economic status of women and their households in Sisophon, Poipet, and Banteay Chhmar in Banteay Meanchey province, Cambodia, following significant improvements to Road No. 56 and National Road 5. The study revealed that as a result of the road improvements, the cost of travel between key locations has not significantly changed. However, the speed of travel has increased, and hence travel time has reduced substantially, making access to services faster and easier. Substantial economic development has benefited most (but not all) households as a result of easier access to markets and increased prices for crops. The most evident benefits to women include access to health and education services. However, it is noted that such improvements were achieved not only by road construction but also because road improvements were combined with other socially sensitive interventions.
